i loved this novel. i was moved by its honesty. yes, fiction can be honest, when it shows you how people are, what they really feel. how they can't protect themselves against these feelings. it left me breathless in the way that it showed vulnerability & weakness. how fucked up things can get because of that. the novel teems with sensuality & vivid portrayals, reminding me very much of some of my favourite fiction of the 19th century: Zola's Germinal, Victor Hugo's Toilers of the Sea, Balzac's la Commedie humaine. this is panoramic in scope, giving us different perspectives of the lives surrounding the life of Moth Watson in order for us to have a deeper insight of him. at times there is unexpected humour in dark situations. love, lust, brutality, humour...it's all mixed together, like such things are in life. this book is full of life.
