~2.5~This isn't a romance but a sci-fi adventure about a hacker and a modified human who manages to save his last slice of humanity. The story is intense and fast-paced, and I was really into it. Then it was over.I knew it was fewer than 5,000 words going in, but I still didn't expect it to end so abruptly. There's NO ROMANCE OR STEAM AT ALL, and, yes, as stated in the tags, the story ends on a CLIFFHANGER. And just because the author warns you doesn't make it okay. These are meant to be complete stories, authors; come on. I wanted to know more about the MCs and this world. After some deliberation, I rounded my rating down to 2 stars because an incomplete story does not represent the spirit of this event. Two words: NOT COOL.

This was a rather lovely short!

I wasn't going to read this. Even though the prompt was interesting as hell, I really wasn't interested in starting this. Why, you ask? Well, because I've been paying better attention to the tags as I've been bitten in the ass too any times this year when I didn't read them. The tags for this are: Tags: futuristic, other world, spies/secret agents, hackers, science experiments, sweet/no sex, cliffhangerSee. Right there. CLIFFHANGER. Which I despise. So I wasn't going to read it, sucked me in.I was riveted. So I have no one to blame but myself when it got to the end and it's a freaking cliffhanger. Because I knew it was going to be. Yet, I still blame the author for starting a fictional piece and leaving me hanging. Not cool, Nan Hart. Not cool. It's got a good premise: "The Weapon" is a cybernetic human who's been reformatted six times. He's lost almost all of his humanity until the mission where he's supposed to kill a hacker named "Shortwave". When The Weapon sees Shortwave he recognizes him as the boy who many years ago gave The Weapon a name, kindness and refuge. “I’ve been reformatted six times. The last time was approximately two weeks after you and I met.”“Then how the hell did you remember me?”Rex’s eyes widened and he tilted his head downward; if he had longer hair, it would have shielded his face. “I… threaded coding in my system and masked it so that no one else would find it, unless they knew where and how to look for it. Even I forgot about it. I didn’t remember any of it until I saw you. Facial recognition read you as the trigger for the coding to resurface.”*****“Rex, why am I so important to you? I didn’t… I didn’t save you before all this. I didn’t even fucking remember you.”Rex was quiet for a moment. “You provided the only kindness I can remember experiencing,” he said. “And in providing that kindness, you encouraged me to change my coding to fight against my handlers. So in a way, you did save me.” He brought Quinton’s hand up to his mouth and pressed his lips against it; not a kiss but the promise of one. “You are the only important thing I know.”Quinton swallowed. “That’s really unhealthy.”Rex shrugged, the nonchalant gesture odd on him. “My life is unhealthy,” he said. “I’m satisfied that for once, it’s unhealthy in a way that doesn’t hurt.” When The Company tracks Rex to Quinton they have to run. They decide to get off planet in order to survive. The story ends pretty abruptly, which is ultimately frustrating because I could see the direction it was going and I wanted more.It says this is 20 pages, but it felt like five or six. Seriously. So I knew it was a cliffhanger. I wasn't going to read it, but I did. Now I'm mad because I feel like I was lured in with the promise of something only to have it snatched away at the last second.ETA:Additionally, except for a hand kiss, there's no "romance" in this. 1. This is an M/M Romance event! If romance is not in your bag of tricks...why accept a prompt?2. There is an expectation (no matter how naive) of a complete story with a beginning, middle, and ending. As the author, you have every right (and probably should) to leave a window open so you can continue a series, build your fan base, and/or make a profit...but this story shouldn't be used like an angler fish uses that little light on its head to lure readers to you only to be devoured by disappointment. If you don't want to provide a story (even if it's only five pages long!), that is true to the prompt image / request and complete you probably shouldn't participate. All participants are volunteers. It's doesn't seem to me to be in the spirit of the event.

The premises of the short story were rather interesting, but there's no romance at all in it and it has a major cliffhanger. The ending's not even a HFN, the story just ends without any solutions and lots of open questions and threads... IMO the stories for the event shouldn't be only the first part of a longer story the author plans to write, but fully developed, complete stories.

This is a very short but well written futuristic, action packed read, about a weapon, Rex, and his desire to protect the only man who's ever shown him kindness. This isn't a romance. What this is is a story of a mechanically modified man who experiences an unnamable emotion and fierce loyalty, to a man who he met many years before. It reminded me of Terminator Salvation in some ways. And while it's not a romance, a foundation has been set for one between the two MCs in the future. There are a lot of things I don't know regarding this story, but I do know that I want to know more. I wish it weren't so short; I'm left with a ton of questions I want answers to. (I just noticed the cliffhanger tag, though it doesn't feel like a cliffhanger as much as unfinished business) I am really hoping that the author revisits and expands this for a full blown novel. Well done. Thanks to the author for their time and effort in the Love is an Open Road event.

This is a very short and lovely YA sci-fi. It's a complete story in itself, although it could be the prologue to a much longer epic tale of survival. Kristan's review says exactly what I want to say, so I won't repeat, other than the bit about hoping the author will consider writing a full-length story about these two characters and their world.Thank you Nan and the team for another wonderful FREE story in Love is an Open Road.

I liked what there was of it and inferred some romantic tones, though that could be my imagination, it stretches pretty far most of the time. ;) This particular cliff-hanger didn't bother me as much as the cliff-hangers in other event offerings this year have. Whether that is due to the way it was done, or just from the fact that I actually liked this story (I don't think I've enjoyed the other cliff-hanger stories, even before we got to the cliff-hanger), I can't say. I do look forward to reading more.

Quinton, aka Shortwave, is a hacker. He is caught by the ‘company’s’ Weapon but was released. The Weapon, somehow knows Quinton’s real name. The Weapon is a male cyborg. The Weapon starts to ‘think’ for himself and follows Quinton, with good intentions. The story ends in a cliffhanger. They are together, but the ‘company’ is after them.

Not rating. Even though I enjoyed it, it's an intro, not a story. A full story would have been great...I liked the characters and world building, and the writing flowed well.

I knew this was a short story going in and for those looking for romance, this really isn't that. I'm fine with that really. I prefer what it really is, an SF action story. It does, however, feel like the beginning of something because it's very open ended. That said, I really liked the characters, Shortwave (Quinton) a hacker and the Weapon (Rex) and the world it's set in. I'd like to see more.

The story is very short, and it only detailed the meeting of Quinton the hacker, and Rex the weapon. This story was like a preview to a more expanded version, so it feels incomplete.

It would've worked perfectly well as a first part of a longer book, but on its own the story feels unfinished. Still, what we did get was pretty good.

This brief, basic story is about a cyborg who recognizes someone, which triggers memories. This causes him to rebel and instead protect his target.
