Every Dog Has His Day Reviews
Of course I loved this book. It's one of my favorite series from my childhood :)
I picked this book up at a LFL near Multnomah Village, mostly because I just couldn't say no to the golden retriever on the cover. Once I got started though, it took FOREVER for me to read this book! I figured it'd be a fast read since it's a kids' book, but I'd start reading before bed and the content was uncompelling enough that I'd fall asleep with the book in my hand and the lights still on about a page later. Eventually, embarrassed that I was still working my way through this book, I took it on a trip and read most of it in one sitting when lazing about in the hotel room one morning. I'm pretty glad to be done with it so I can get back to better fare. The book itself is sort of an adventure book, but most of the unrealistic elements come so late in the book that they just come off as uninformed. The whole bionic dog thing could have been utilized more fully too. It's mostly used to explain the dog-to-human ESP McGrowl has, and as a thing that an evil heavy would desire the dog for in the melodrama. In the climax(?) of the book McGrowl does use his super strength to save the day, but it's sort of silly when you read the details. It seems like they could have done so much more with the bionic angle. Perhaps they do in other books in the series? At any rate, if you have a young person in your life who struggles to find reading material and a long-but-simplistic adventure might spark their excitement, perhaps this will fit the bill! If you have a geeky child who has a decent amount of knowledge about the outdoors (like how to pitch a tent or how volcanic eruptions work, scientifically) then it probably wouldn't be hard to find another book that would be a better choice. One cool discovery, the author is an actor who is fairly well-known, but not by name! Check out his bio and photo in the back of the book.
This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk. Thomas and McGrowl are off on a wilderness adventure to Devil's Island. Legendhas it there's a secret volcano on the island. Thomas Wiggins, the main human, starts out having to clean his room. His birthday had been 2 days ago. His dad was afraid of dogs. He did not like them. He was over 6 feet tall!! Violet, his sister, didn't think all the time. She was watching the News and there was a red thing right beside their town. She asked if it would rain. They lived in Cedar Springs. McGrowl, their dog, was a stray. They found him. Thomas and Violet found out he was bionic. This was all after he had won the big dog race a few years before (That's what his collar said, but they knew he was stray because it said he was from Maine, and they lived in Philadelphia.Violet took karate. She was really bad at it. The dog, McGrowl, used evil mind control and changed her results. She did not know this until she won the "Karate Kid of the Year" award. She cried. She did not like McGrowl anymore. He could also talk. He apologized 132 times, according to Thomas. She eventually forgave him when he said he would give her his dessert every day for a month. The book then ends with:"Friends?" said McGrowl"Friends," Said Violet. And they fell asleep faster than they would ever fall asleep.
It's awesome if you have a very creative imagination
cute book for elementary students with an air of espionage.
My favorite part is when mcgrowl was safe.the worst part was when the volcano erupted.the best character was mcgrowl.the worst characters were the bad people
mcgrowl surprises us again
