the rating is actually for the book cover. my favorite ever - i couldnt believe it wasnt on here... when i was a wee girl - i loved this book. its probably terrible, but its a book i would "visit" at the supermarket turny-racks because i loved the expression on that girls face. and then i bought it. and read it. that girl is not a good friend.

I read this book so long ago, and yet I STILL remember many of the scenes as if I'd just read them again! It certainly made a powerful impression.

Playmates is eerie and creepy and very disturbing, but it's well-written and drenched with vibrant imagery and creativity, sort of a combination of Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny And Girly and The Influence, but in a class all its own.

When will people learn not to take the creepy backwoods road as a shortcut? WHEN!

Creepy and disturbing!! This book reminds me so much of Psycho and Texas Chainsaw Massacre (minus all the gore in the latter). Perfect early-October reading! A woman and her little girl are driving to meet her husband out of town for some vacation time when they decide to take a shortcut down a country road. Lo and behold, the car breaks down and the only place in sight is a creepy old rundown house. Even creepier are the people who live there. You can probably guess what happens next! Published in 1987, this book has a great old-timey feel to it, with no cell phones to call for help, and in fact, no phones of any kind in the house. A fun read!

This book started it all for me. While coming back from a fishing trip from out in the wilderness stopped at a small shop on the side of the road to grab a drink. While in the shop noticed an old wine barrel with a number of second hand books for sale. This one I purchased for 2 bucks. After reading this book it will make you re think about what to do if your car breaks down on a lonely, back road out in the country.

this was the first horror book i ever read and it scared the bejeezus outta me! OMG... that started me on the road to OCD and putting heavy objects on top of faced-down scary books at night when i went to bed. never thought of the freezer...

Disappointingly routine thriller, for a book with such a initially strange premise. This is probably blasphemous to say on a website devoted to READING BOOKS, but the movie is probably better just because it has Angie Dickinson in it.

This book could not live up to its horrible, lurid promises. I can't believe Andrew Neiderman got to be the new V.C. Andrews!

Scary from start to finish. You never know what really goes on in them backwoods. One of my favorite backwoods movies is "Wrong Turn".
