This story, second in the Family Secrets series, is a tour de force. I went into it expecting it to focus on a cooking show competition, and it has that. But oh so much more. Eliza Westin gave up the baby she had at 16 at the insistence of her parents and because her boyfriend left town, threatened by her father to not return. When Pierce does, after serving his time in the Middle East and losing his ability to father another child, he and Eliza marry, but they share deep-seated secrets. Hers, that baby she never saw and he, why he wants no children and can't see himself as a father. At all. When Eliza's episodes on the cooking show include sabotage, she wonders who's out to get her and when she doesn't win, but her disappointment goes by the board when the child she never saw now has the opportunity to reach out to her. How he does so I won't give away, any more than the deeply affecting way in which this complicated story with complex and compelling characters is wrapped up. It will hit you in the heart. Hard. But it felt so good. And was so right.
