Arc provided by Netgalley and Bantam- Dell for an honest review.4 starsRiveting PAranormal romance/ actionWhen I first started this book it quickly became apparent that it was a second In a series and I had not read the first. I hesitated to continue but; instead I chose to read on, with the resolve that I would put book two down if I felt lost and read book one. I was able to read through book two and thoroughly enjoy it thanks to the author providing enough background as to not spoil book one , but enough to follow the charachters. With that said; read book one first . I plan to since I have every intention of reading the remainder of this series. This review will be brief since I do not wish to give away too much of the plot line.In the beginning of this book you are introduced to Nikki a young private detective with phsychic skills that continue to develope ; working in conjunction with her best freind and mentor Jake on a case to watch a teeengage boy whose mother is concerned he is planning to run off. In their effort to follow and protect him they are brought in t contact with several vampires who not only abduct the boy but also severly injure Jake. Nikki follows Jake to the hospital but knows that she must leave to try and find this boy.Meanwhile, Michael is be called upon by Selina and the group he works with to join forces with Nikki, the very women he wishes to keep his distance from since he loves her, but believes he is no god for her. Michael's assigned case of wealthy men disappearing with out a trace is linked to Nikki s missing teenager and the vampires that took them. The two reluctantly join forces in an action packed abduction / murder mystery filled with psychics , vampires, witches and flame imps and romantic interludes between Michael and Nikki.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it hard to put down but as with everything life intervenes and forced me to , s a two day read . Would recommend this to anyone who enjoys action, romance and the paranormal . Great read!

HEARTS OF DARKNESS is the second book in the Nikki and Michael series. I am so glad that the publisher decided to rerelease this series because I think it’s quite good. As a fan of Arthur’s other series, I found that this gave me an opportunity to read her older titles. I think this will help readers discover this series or perhaps reminds loyal fans just how talented Arthur is.This book continues off from where the last book ended. Nikki is now forever connected to Michael after having letting him feed from her. They share a connection that is unique. However, it means that if Michael dies, then so does Nikki. This puts on strain on Nikki as she knows that Michael lives a dangerous life, no matter how experienced or resourceful he is. She doesn’t like the idea of being dependent on him, especially since he has the power to hurt her greatly.I found that I am really, really enjoying their dynamics. Every time Michael enters the picture, I get a little more excited because their chemistry is potent and enthralling. However, I don’t think it ever takes away from the plot of the series.Arthur pens a very tightly-written mystery subplot that incorporates action and suspense in a way that pulls the story forward. If you enjoyed the first book, then I think you will enjoy the second. Yet, this installment seems even better than the first.Fans of Nalini Singh’s writing will enjoy this series. I found the writing to be similar, incorporating an old-ancient feel to it that makes it feel grander than what it really is. As a result, you get a story that is rich in description, vivid in emotion and strong in its character building and plot.I have thoroughly enjoyed this series so far and am looking forward to read more of Nikki and Michael’s adventures!*ARC provided by author

So this was an okay read.I like Nikki and Michael. This takes place 6mo. after book one. Nikki didn't mess around about how she feels about Michael now that she's getting a second chance with him. She didn't play games and I totally appreciated that. There is no misunderstanding. Michael's resistance, and the reasons behind it were not totally without merit, but still "stupid man" heavy. The fact that they were only together for a week total before this book starts kind of makes the "I'd die for you" thing hard to swallow, but even they talk about how they don't really know much about each other yet,so it wasn't totally ignored.Arthur is easy to read, some notable over usage of a few descriptive words and I'm really not feeling her sexy times. Just seem awkward. But story is good, and characters are likable. will most likely read the next one.

The second book in the Nikki & Michael series, Hearts in Darkness was another slice of paranormal romantic suspense that had me gripped until the last page. I didn't want to put this one down, and yet again it was probably thanks to the leading vampire in the book, Michael. Michael is the sort of tall dark and deadly that I love. At the end of the first book, he leaves the heroine Nikki because she gave her blood to him in order to save her life, unwittingly releasing the darker vampire side of him that he had kept on a tight leash. It's that darkness and the feeling that he could be just as much a bad guy as the next vampire if it wasn't for his iron will and the depth of his desire to protect the world from his sort of evil, that really draws me to him, along with the romantic notion of wanting to protect Nikki from everything including himself. This book opens six months after the first and Nikki is heartbroken even though she knew that Michael was going to leave her, and she's been searching for him whilst continuing her job as a private investigator. Good luck with that since he's brooding in a remote cabin and quietly pining for her. Her latest case leads her to a run in with a female vampire and her vampire minions from which she barely escapes alive, and together with another case that points towards the same location in Wyoming, it leads her back into Michael's life. Convinced by his superiors at the Circle to take up a case at a resort called Jackson Hole and to take Nikki with him because she'll die if he isn't there to protect her, Michael reluctantly returns to her and convinces her to play newlyweds as a cover during their investigation. Okay, it's an obvious plot device along with another one in this book that I won't mention, but it works for bringing them back together and that's fine with me.I'm glad that this time Nikki has the good sense to do all in her power to make Michael stay and convince him that his life isn't the only one full of danger and darkness and that she can handle it if he'd just let her into his world and his heart. We didn't get the repetition of her feelings this time, although we were treated to a hefty does of repetition of set phrases by the author and a few grammatical errors / wrong word usage. I can overlook those but Ms Arthur really did repeat a couple of things to death, such as licking dry lips and snorting softly, and rubbing her arms. I'll forgive her for now though as the repetitions this time weren't as irritating and the plot was great, full of characters and emotion, and suspense too. These books are chocked full of that. The plot is detailed, description is vivid enough to allow you to picture things, and the suspense is enough to hold you in place on your armchair and keep you reading. The romance really blossoms in this one and although it takes half the book for the lovebirds to realise that there's just no use fighting each other, it didn't irritate me. I didn't want them to rush their relationship as I was enjoying just how pigheaded and stubborn the pair could be. They're a match made in Heaven. Nikki is stubborn as Hell in her desire to conquer Michael's iron will and determination to keep her at arm's length, Michael is steadfast in his desire to protect her from his darkness and the evil in his world regardless of the pain he would feel in living without her for eternity. Perfect! All in all, I'm going to say that if you're a fan of darker paranormal romances that have plenty of suspense and plot, then pick this series up and fall in love with these characters for yourself. I didn't um or ah this time about the rating. It's a straight four hearts from me, and I'm off to read the next book in the series as I want to know what's going to happen and what changes are going to take place next with Nikki's evolving powers!ETA: Elizabeth, one of the antagonists, is supposed to be 800 years old, but at one point Michael thinks about how she loves to pit vampires against each other in fights and puts it down to her being born in the time of roman gladiators. Well, not if she was only 800 she wasn't! Pretty basic historical inaccuracy.

Hearts in Darkness begins six months after Michael walked away from Nikki. Since then, he's been trying to regain control over his hunger. Seline has been helping him. She's been "a constant, if distant, companion. Badgering him endlessly, never letting his resolve slip, never letting him give up hope. She'd been his strength in the early days of darkness, when the demon was close to winning control, and he'd just wanted to give up the fight permanently." Nikki's powers have changed since Michael shared his life force with her. He hasn't told her that by doing so he made her his thrall. He has no desire to control her though, only to keep her safe.Nikki is working with Jake on their current mission, keeping an eye on Matthew Kincaid, a teenager who's mother is convinced he's going to run away with an internet girlfriend. She's also asked by a detective to help search for his niece. Her cases eventually lead her to Jackson Hole.Michael is dispatched by Seline to head to the same ski resort in Jackson Hole where people are going missing and "darkness is felt". She tells him "the darkness is linked to {his} past" and it's something he must deal with. He's resistant when he finds out that Nikki will also be there, working her own case, but finally gives in once she tells him that without his help Nikki will die.Together they head to the ski resort as husband and wife on paper while each deals with their feelings that have only grown stronger since being apart. Michael refuses all of Nikki's advances, telling her "My world is darkness, Nikki. Yours is light. We cannot be." No matter how strong his feelings are for her, he refuses to grow their relationship because of the fear that he will not be able to keep her safe. Nikki doesn't give up though, she keeps pushing at the walls he's built up to the point that Michael realizes he may never be able to walk away from her again.I enjoyed this story more than book 1, maybe because I'm now used to earlier writing style of Keri Arthur or maybe because of the relationship between Nikki and Michael. Either way, I continue to look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Hearts in Darkness is a dark and gripping vampire tale. Nikki and Michael are once again forced together to face a terrible evil. Battling with the thrall mental bond and blood lust, Michael has left Nikki broken hearted for 6 months. Now Michael is back but he is fearful of the danger his presence causes. Can Nikki and Michael find the evil threat and save the missing boy before the evil takes them?I loved watching Nikki break away at Michael's desire to keep her at arms length. As I stated above this is a very dark and sinister paranormal romance. The plot was suspense filled and although I was routing for the HEA, the odds are against the couple especially when an old relationship comes in play. I found myself drawn into the conflict and mystery behind the antagonists which was completely original and intriguing. I am anxiously waiting to read the next story in this series. Once again Keri Arthur created a story that pulls you into the world of her fabulous imagination. This ARC copy of Hearts in the Darkness was given to me by Random House Publishing Group - Dell in exchange for an honest review. This is the second book in the Nikki & Michael series by Keri Arthur and continues the story about 6 months after the end of Dancing with the Devil. I won't give spoilers for this book but I'd strongly recommend reading the series in order & not continuing to read this review if you're new to the series. The end of the previous book saw Michael leaving Nikki in order to protecter her - both from himself and from the dangers from the life he leads - and despite his love for her he has managed to keep his distance and avoid all contact. Nikki is devastated that he has gone & is finding it hard to deal with the fact that he left her - she doesn't understand why he didn't even say goodbye. She is still working as a Private Investigator and when Nikki and her partner Jake came under attack when following a local teenager Jake was injured and is now critically ill in hospital. The teenager has vanished and it is up to Nikki to find him. Michael is asked to investigate the disappearance of several wealthy men and he finds himself in need of Nikki's help - it appears that the cases they are working on are entwined. Michael is still determined to keep Nikki at arms length, but now that Nikki has admitted her love for him she is equally determined to be a part of his life. In spite of this they are going to have to work together if they are going to solve the mystery and survive this latest threat. I really enjoyed the first book in this series & was not disappointed with this second installment. Once again the action was continuous and I didn't want to put the book down - the plot was fast paced and had plenty of twists. I'm enjoying seeing the relationship develop between Nikki and Michael and it makes a nice change that they can both openly admit their love for each other. It's also interesting to see how Nikki's psychic abilities are changing now that she is linked to Michael. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Once more there was action right from the start and I definitely love that about this series. Keri Arthur certainly found a great mix between Paranormal, action and romance but I have to admit that I like the actions parts best. She has a knack to draw you in more with each chapter and that makes it hard to take even the smallest breaks from the book, I kept thinking: “Ohhh, just one more chapter, I need to see what happens now.”It’s probably not easy to keep that kind of pace and yet it works perfectly. I also liked the changes in Nikki and Michael although (view spoiler)[I take small issues with the ‘I love you’ being thrown around after they knew each other technically only one week and then haven’t seen each other for 6 months. (hide spoiler)] But hey, that’s just my personal preference and a really small detail that was fast forgotten and I have to admit that it was nice to see Nikki fighting and not hopping onto the angst train with Michael. As much as I like Nikki and Michael as standalone characters, I can’t quite warm up with their relationship or maybe I’m just projecting Michael’s negativity. I hope that and the angst portion when it comes to their relationship will change with the next installment. This time around Michael’s reasoning against a relationship was a little easier to understand though – even more so after meeting Elizabeth. The writing is really good and I loved seeing how all the different paths came together in one big picture. A pleasant surprise were the fire imps as I haven’t read about anything quite like that yet and I hope there will be more elements like that in future books. All in all, solid 4 stars for a second installment that kept me curious and on my toes - I look forward to the next book.ARC provided by Random House Publishing Group - Bantam Dell via NetGalley.

2.5 ★sLife has never been so insane for Nikki James. There's another teenager missing. She has another vampire to contend with. Her partner and best friend Jake is in the hospital dying. And a madman is kidnapping the wealthy.Just when it seems nothing else could possibly go wrong, Michael returns - but not for her. This time, however, Nikki has no intention of running from either the case or from what still lies between her and Michael. And she isn't going to let him run, either. The last thing Michael Kelly needs is a confrontation with Nikki - especially when his control over his bloodlust is still so tenuous. But when a kidnapper steps up his agenda to murder, Michael's forced into a partnership with Nikki to keep her safe. Soon Michael discovers the biggest danger he faces may not be from his need to "taste" her, but from his desire to make her a permanent part of his life - a life that is sure to get her killed.Nikki is determined to make Michael see that life apart is worse than death. But before she can make him see the light, a spectre from Michael's past rises that could destroy any hope she has of a future with him. Because this time the threat isn't physical. It's a matter of the heart. Nikki must compete with the woman - the vampire - for whom Michael gave up life.Cliched, sentimental & not very well-written. The relationship between Nikki & Michael still lacks feeling despite the sex & psychic connection, there is no joy in their being together. There's little in the way of positive emotion in the whole story & definitely no humour. There hardly seems much point in continuing if no one is ever happy about anything.I am still interested in these early books as I have quite a few of Arthur's later ones, & it's always interesting to see beginnings, but I fail to see why everything has to be so dreary.

Better then the first This is the second book of the Nikki and Michael series by Keri Arthur. It starts with Nikki searching for another teenager whose parent is worried that he going to run away. This bring back the memories back to Nikki about the last case and when Michael walked away. Nikki follows the kid into a factory and gets attacked by five vampires. She lives but Jake, her boss, gets shot and ends up in intensive care. Nikki also gets asked by a police officer if she can find his niece since she has the power to find people. She agrees tying the niece to the missing teenager she was following. Michael has been away from Nikki for six months following her saving his life. Though since she gave him human blood he has to fight the inner demon again and he doesn’t want to have Nikki in the way of that. Though fate doesn’t allow him to stay away. A case brings them back together as Michael has to fight the vampire that is master minding everything that is happening, there’s rich men going missing and it’s up to them to stop it.Once Michael comes back into her life Nikki is determined to keep him there. She wants to show that they belong together, but how will she do it when he’s so determined to keep her at arms length? Michael wants Nikki too though doesn’t want her in his life because of the darkness in it, everything he has to do to bring down the bad guys. Will they ever get it to work? This was a better book. At least there was sex scenes unlike the last one. The character development is way better too. You finally see some of the evil in Michaels life and why he’s keeping Nikki away. It’s a definite four

Hearts in Darkness is such an appropriate title! The continued story of our struggling lovers is a great sequel! One that gives you hope they will work their sh*t out. To be frank...lol I loved the struggle they each faced with being together and apart. Thrown into various dark situations that can strengthen their bond or end both completely. With old loves flame so close and dark forces trying to out wit Nikki and Michael, you never know what will happen. The raw emotion these two feel when the other is in peril leads you to hope it will all just work out in the end. But the other shoes drops when they least expect it at every turn. Can the happiness they have found in each others arms last..? I for one can't wait to see what is next?I love the action and thrilling ride Keri Arthur leads you on.Each book is packed with love, suspense and creativity all the way around. The fighting for each other and against mutual foes never tires and never replicates, always something new and exhilarating.

I have been scathing about a previous series of Keri Arthur-the werewolf reservation books-but this was a good read! Nikki is a developing psychic working as a PI and is following a rich teenage boy who gets snatched while she and her partner are attacked by vampires. The missing boy and the missing daughter of a cop are linked to an investigation being run by Michael, Nikki's vampire ex-lover. They are now investigating a resort where rich men are missing and Nikki wants to use the chance to get Michael back but faces competition from the vampire who turned Michael. Really enjoyed this book. Nikki is a nice character, the type you would like as your friend, Michael is a vampire with personality and you do want them back together. There is romance in the book but not at the expense of plot so there will be plenty for UF and PNR fans to enjoy. I'll be reading the rest of this series for sure.

Oh shit...Oh yes...Michael...Sorry I got distracted...Oh how I love Michael. This was one hell of a read; damn I hate that there are only four books in this series. Ms. Arthur does not disappoint, she kept me on the edge of my seat with all that was going on. I didn't see how Nikki and Michael where going to make it out.Thank god for Nikki's strength and resolve and thank god she doesn't listen to Michael. She is one hell of a woman. I loved the way she kept going after Michael, determined to make him change his mind about them as a couple. The flame imps where new to me and they really added flavor to the mix. Nikki's abilities are growing and expanding and it will be interesting to see where the lead.I thought I loved the first book; let me tell you this was blew the me away. Please do yourself a favor and get your hands on this series; it's just that damn good. Now I'm on to Chasing the Shadows...

This is the second book in the series, that is a continuation of a relationship between Michael (Vampire) and Nikki (now immortal, but not a vampire) If he dies, she dies...This book is takes place 6 months after the last one. Michael & Nikki are forced together to investigate the disappearance of men... The heat between Nikki & Michael is palpable... Intense. The Evil... Michael's maker...Oooooo...Actually, this whole book was intense! I couldn't read all at once, because I had other things I really needed to do, but I really wanted to. Infact, I read this a week ago & couldn't bring myself to do a review yet because I had book hangover... You know when you're still thinking about a book days later... I had to read a totally different kind of book just to get away from it...BUT all that said, I can't wait to read the next book!!Keri Arthur is in the Higher class of author list! You have to read her books... You just have to! It's a given!!

Hearts in Darkness was a definite improvement on the first book. It's not free of problems, of course, but both story and characters were engaging. Nikki has grown. She's not the whiner of the first book, nor she's fearful of her emotions. I'm not sure I buy into her new-found confidence in wanting Michael this much (I'm too proud a person for that :P), but it was a pleasure seeing her moving into kick-ass status.Michael is still a little bit too Edward-ian (of Twilight fame), but he's moved into adulthood too. The story has an interesting plot and a good pace, that could have been tighter if the Michael and Nikki dilemma had been seriously cut. I still believe this series has too much romance cooties for my tastes, but I admit you are hearing the cynic in me with this oh-so-tough declaration. :)DRC courtesy of the publisher via Netgalley

Read more at www.ohmyshelves.comHearts in Darkness is action all the way through and it's a book that I didn't want to put down. The plot of this story was very different from the normal and Ms. Arthur has a way of bringing new characters to a series and making it magical and not unrealistic. I love how this isn't just your normal vampire meets girl and they fall in love book. This is different and I applaud Ms. Arthur for keeping it that way.

Second in the Nikki & Michael urban fantasy series and revolving around a powerful psychic and a vampire at odds with each other and themselves. Based in Lyndhurst but the action takes place in Jackson Hole. It's been six months since Dancing with the Devil, 1.My TakeIt is better than Dancing with the Devil, but the tropes Arthur drags into this made me roll my eyes. I wish I got as much exercise as my eyes seem to! The I-love-you-but-aren't-good-enough trope always makes me so nuts, and Arthur doesn't help it at all when she forces Nikki into being determined-to-force-him-to-acknowledge-their-love. Yeah, 'cause it's so much easier to be miserable. And both their lives are on the line whether they're together or apart, so???I think Seline — powerful with a heart — is playing matchmaker in the so-very-obvious ploy of forcing Michael to join up — as a couple — with Nikki in their undercover roles. I both like and am annoyed by Nikki. I love that she stands up for herself, and yet she insists on running into situations she'd be smarter to avoid. I know, I know, it's what makes a story dramatic, but other writers manage to avoid the lame aspects of this trope, so I end up expecting a writer to work a bit harder. Mmmm, that sounds mean. And it's not like I have to do the work…That said, Arthur does make me feel for the victims, especially young Matthew and Rachel. They don't deserve this. One has a horrible set of parents while the other has family that cares but probably feels apart due to being gay. There is a nice bit of drama to this, although it could have had a greater depth of tension. There's an interesting twist to this with a new species of supernatural I've never read of before. Those flame imps are a treat and have both a sci-fi feel to them — they make me think of the original Star Trek — and a poetic attitude toward life. One that will break your heart. And it will prove that consideration for others will always prove to be the best choice. Another twist is how the flame imps and other beings are combined and the ultimate consequences with all the tension pulled in by Arthur. Whew.We do get some back history on Michael in both his human and vampire states. More back "history" brings up the family abuse and continues to make me wish parents had to be licensed before they could have babies. It's also a case of crime-doesn't-pay, as Cordell found out. Seems life doesn't pay either when rich men are involved. And I do not understand why Parnell "needs an alibi". I suspect a poor choice of phrasing. The StoryLife has never been so insane for Nikki James. There's another teenager missing. She has another vampire to contend with. Her partner and best friend Jake is in the hospital dying. And a madman is kidnapping the wealthy.Just when it seems nothing else could possibly go wrong, Michael returns — but not for her. But when a kidnapper steps up his agenda to murder, he's forced into a partnership with Nikki to keep her safe. The CharactersAfter events in Dancing with the Devil, the life of Nikki James, an orphan with psychometric and kinetic abilities, has been linked to the vampire who broke her heart. Jake Morgan is her best friend and her boss. Mary is his worried wife. The 300-plus-year-old Michael Kelly is a psychic vampire who was ordered to guard Nikki by his own boss, Seline, a psychic witch and Michael's supervisor at the Damask Circle, an organization that hunts down supernatural evil. Doyle is a pilot for the Circle. The 800-year-old Elizabeth is the vampire who made Michael.Detective Col MacEwan is a cop with a bit more sympathy for Nikki's involvement. He has an 18-year-old niece, Rachel; Sondra is her mother.Matthew Kincaid is a genius computer nerd tired of being ignored. Mrs. Kincaid is his worried mother. Vance Hutton is a wealthy industrialist. Lucas Rodeman is another wealthy newlywed with his wife, "Ginger". Michelle Hannerman, Frances Baker, and Mary Gordon have also gone missing.Randolf Cordell is a vampire paraplegic who works as the resort's manager. William Parnell, Robert Carson, and two others gave Parnell an alibi. Ladonna was an old witch working a fairground circuit. Jacinta is a masseuse at the resort. Lizzie is the vampire who seduced Matthew.Flame imps are tied to the land and can inhabit the bodies of others, control them. Trevgard is a former client of Jake and Nikki's. Jasper Harding was the psychopathic snake of a vampire-animator in Dancing with the Devil. Tommy had been her first lover and the leader of the gang who knew a good thing when he seduced it. Wraith are devil spawn. The Cover and TitleThe cover is purples with a sexy Nikki (wearing a cleavage-enhancing deep purple tank top) facing us, her long black hair blowing in the breeze against a backdrop of an elaborate wrought iron fence. The title is all about the bad ones, their Hearts in Darkness, that destroy so many lives.

If you think Keri Arthur's Riley Jenson series has too much sex for story, try this earlier series where the story telling is still paramount. Nikki is a street kid, all grown up now, but still with hangups and trust issues. Michael is a centuries old Vampire, still in thrall to his maker. It is also a murder mystery and a very good one. Together they overcome all - and solve the mystery. Well maybe not all - they are only human (and vampire) after all.In the first book, Nikki wins free of her trust issues, in the second Michael overcomes his feelings for his maker and chooses life with Nikki. What can possibly go wrong? I'll have to read the third book in the series for that. :-)

There's another teenager missing. She has another vampire to contend with. Her partner and best friend Jake is in the hospital dying. And a madman is kidnapping the wealthy. Just when it seems nothing else could possibly go wrong, Michael returns-but not for her. This time, however, Nikki has no intention of running from either the case or from what still lies between her and Michael. And she isn't going to let him run, either. The last thing Michael Kelly needs is a confrontation with Nikki-especially when his control over his bloodlust is still so tenuous. But when a kidnapper steps up his agenda to murder, he's forced into a partnership with Nikki to keep her safe. Soon Michael discovers the biggest danger he faces may not be from his need to "taste" her, but from his desire to make her a permanent part of his life-a life that is sure to get her killed. Nikki is determined to make Michael see that life apart is worse than death. But before she can make him see the light, a specter from Michael's past rises that could destroy any hope she has of a future with him. Because this time the threat isn't physical. It's a matter of the heart. Nikki must compete with the woman-the vampire-for whom Michael gave up life.My ThoughtsAs in the previous book Nikki James is a magnet for all kinds of danger, if it is out there she somehow manages to find trouble. This time it is found at the very beginning in a warehouse where she tracks the young teenage boy she has been hired to find, she and her partner Jake find themselves outnumbered by a group of vampires under the command of an older female vampire who apparently decides Nikki is to be spared but the same does not hold true for Jake and he is grievously injured. Having gotten Jake to the hospital Nikki is torn between staying with him in case he loses the battle to live and her duty to find their client, to complicate matters she has also been asked by one of her allies in the local police force to find his missing niece. Turns out the dilemma for Nikki becomes even more unsettling with the return of Michael Kelly, the two find themselves working together and this time Nikki makes up her mind no matter what that she and Michael will work out their differences and stay together when the case is over! The entire time that Nikki is working towards convincing Michael to give their relationship a chance his continued stance that the two "could never be" just about drove me up the wall, they obviously have bonded beyond simply being lovers and yet because he has some outdated notion that his vampire bloodlust is too dangerous to take the chance on their being together he is determined to leave Nikki behind once again.Between the tension that the two generate with their need for each other and the intensity which permeates their dangerous joint investigations this is another page turner that leaves the reader wishing for answers to come sooner and yet it also moves the action along fairly rapidly so that you never feel bogged down in any particular moment. For a second book in a series it also has to be said that you do not have to worry if you start with this one, Keri Arthur very nicely covers the back story from the previous book allowing this one to be enjoyed in full with very little feeling of being uninformed of prior events. I like Michael but he needs to up his game. Looking forward to reading the next book.

Nikki has been apart from Michael for 6 months, 6 months while Michael slowly relearns to control his hunger and 6 months when Michael resolves to stay away from Nikki. His life, his world, his job is just too dangerous for her and he is determined to keep her safeUnfortunately for him, one of his jobs coincides with one of hers – she has another missing teenager and a lost contact’s family member, neither of which she is willing to ignore and she’s certainly not going to leave it because Michael asks her tooThey are thrown back together in an exclusive resort trying to find a slew of missing people – and finding surprises both magical and personal waiting for them and an entire species depending on them for survival. After the last book, I was a little dubious about this series, I was still waiting for something more unique to happen to set it out. While the character interactions pretty much fit some very long established moulds, the plot of this book broke out of the tropes. We had some completely new creatures and a twisty plot line that made use of them in a pretty new an interesting way that lead to a pretty original story and definitely one that could not be entirely predicted since so much was hidden and hidden well. It was a plot that had elements I have not seen elsewhere and put the series on my mental map as a unique creation with its own exclusive items that are both intriguing and fascinating – and make me want to read the next book to see where the author’s imagination will take me next and how much further this world will expandThis world is still played very close to the author’s chest. In some ways I like this – like the first book the writing style is pretty well handled in terms of descriptiveness. I don’t think the fight scenes necessarily work brilliantly, often giving me the feeling of people queuing up for battle and a few anti-climaxes, but they do work well. We do have some overly emotional monologues but, again, they’re pretty restrained to what I’ve seen elsewhere and even in the first book. The writing is careful, it has hiccoughs but they’re slight – it controls description and unnecessary exposition though I have to say I would like a little more world building about vampires and the organisation Michael works for. But the fact the hints encourage me to learn more is a good sign in itself. There is also a considerable improvement in the relationship between Michael and Nikki. Now, it isn’t perfect, but a lot of what isn’t perfect is also challenged, at least to a degree. I’ve said before a hundred times how much I hate rushed relationships – and Nikki and Michael lamenting how they cannot possibly live without one another despite only having known each other for a week is definitely rushed. I just never get the sense of foundation to this relationship. Even Michael lampshades it with this line:“We barely even know each other. We may share thoughts and we may share passion, but we have never once shared our dreams or our desires for the future. I don’t know your favorite movie or color or food or even what you like to read. And you know as little about me.”I cheered when I read this line. And I cheered that Nikki was talking about finding these out –because that would be great, them deciding they have good potential and it would be worth seeing if they could build a relationship and develop it further. I was on board for that, even with Nikki angry because Michael wouldn’t try to see if they could have a relationship.Read More

I received an e-copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. In my review of Dancing with the Devil, the first in the Nikki & Michael series, I mentioned that I was disappointed with the lack of romance. It had felt like they were much more focused on the job and the dangers surrounding them then in the budding feelings between them. Well, where Dancing with the Devil lacked, Hearts in Darkness definitely made up for it.Hearts in Darkness started with Nikki gritting her teeth and diving into her work despite the mournful feelings she has for Michael leaving her. She is following yet another petulant teenager that has unwittingly stumbled into supernatural trouble. Attempting to save the teenager from an internet date that seems terribly foreboding, Nikki crosses paths with a group of vampires bent on taking the young boy, Matthew, and riding themselves of the burden of Nikki and her boss, Jake. Nikki escapes the clutches of the vampire horde by the skin of her teeth but her colleague is mortally wounded.Despite Nikki's close connection to Jake, she decides to pursue Matthew and the vampires who had him. This predestined decision causes the planets to align and Nikki to once more cross paths with Michael, the man who owns and, subsequently, broke her heart. This time, Nikki's gumption to not let him leave again, spurs her to seduce, distract, and allure Michael into showing his hand and confessing his feelings for her. All the while, Nikki and Michael are hot on the trail of the fiends who have kidnapped not only Matthew, but many wealthy men for unknown reasons.I was pleasantly surprised by how spunky Nikki had become. She had completely abandoned all the fear that held her fast during the first book. She decided once and for all that she was not going to be afraid of letting someone in and loving someone else who could ultimately destroy her. I did quirk a brow at how fast she changed from skittish, docile kitten to sexy, seductive vixen. But, really, all I could do was smile and acknowledge that Nikki was going after what she wanted and damned the consequences. You have to admire that.Michael was as frustrating as usual. He is always so determined to keep Nikki safe despite the fact that even when she's not around him she is having brushes with death. What makes him think that having him around to protect her more efficiently would be wrong? Silly boy, your woman has presented a sound case, stop being so stubborn and embrace the fact that she is with you, whether you want her to be or not! This book was head-and-tails above the first book, as so many series often are. I liked the introduction of other supernatural creatures that weren't vampires, as well as the romantic back and forth between Nikki and Michael. The sex scenes are still a little short and not as detailed as the scenes in the Riley Jensen series. It is almost as if Arthur is a bit uneasy about getting detailed. No worries, Arthur, I've read 50 Shades of Gray... there is very little that can make me faint of heart after that.Hearts in Darkness is a book that has a dash of romance, a sprig of fantasy, and a whole lot of action. It is the type of book you will be hard-pressed to put down and will ignite the hunger for more and more of Nikki and Michael.Review Posted on: http://www.ladybugliterature.blogspot...

Hearts in Darkness Nikki and Michael Book 2. Keri Arthur.ARC supplied by Netgalley.Keri Arthur was new to me until I recently had the first Nikki and Michael book Dancing with the Devil for review. I loved it and so was keen to get book two. It doesn't disappoint, once again Keri's writing is clear and concise, and filled with action packed moments, drama, and yet the thread of Nikki and Michaels romance runs solidly through it. Michael left her without even saying goodbye at the end of the last book. Forced by Nikki to drink her blood when he was dying and didn't realise what he was doing, he has to fight again the demon that makes him crave human blood and is scared he'll accidentally give in and kill Nikki if he stays. She's hurt but understands in a way, though doesn't agree and when they're thrown together in a new adventure she warns him she's not taking No for an answer. He says he understands but will hold out, but Nikki – not only is she a tough investigator but determined not to give up on their love. Again a brilliant story with them fighting the unknown with unknown powers yet. I was gripped – I love this sort of story and the romance threading it adds to the attraction for me. Not just will they get out of this tight corner, but will Nikki win out on her ploy to reel Michael in...I'm rooting for her – they need and are perfect for each other. Jake is in hospital fighting for his life from an early part of this book so we don't see much of him – he's one of Nikki’s only friends, having taken her from the streets years ago and given her something to live for. He and his wife are like surrogate parents and Nikki fears Mary will persuade him to give up if he pulls through, and move far away leaving her jobless and friendless. :( Poor Nikki – life is tough for her, and just when it looks up and she meets and gives in and let Michael into her life she loses him....Anyway, they have to pose as a honeymoon couple to trace people who've mysteriously gone missing from a popular resort. You know bad things are in store when they meet a vampire driver for the hotel at the airport and he looks sick, and then melts to nothing in front of them. That’s just doesn't happen to vampires, and they suspect that what they are dealing with is once again something other than the norm, and they are going in virtually blind fighting one of more unknown foes with powers they can't imagine. Oh and along the way a very beautiful vampire lover from Michaels history comes along. Poor Nikki, and just what will meeting her after so many years do to Michael. Does he still love her? All questions Nikki asks herself. A great novel for fantasy lovers, it has danger and adventure along with vampires, fire sprites, and dark magic. Then there's Nikki trying to persuade Michael he won't kill her, that their love is worth a risk. He's really a lovely man – I love it when he says “stay here” in a commanding voice and Nikki replies with the equivalent of “ in your dreams” :) she's not one to shrink from danger, always wants to do what is right and Michael knows really he can't protect her but it doesn't stop him from trying...Well written and edited, priced at £4.98 for 288 pages, its not the cheapest but its definitely one I’d read over and over especially as I love to go through a whole series back to back. This series has just been extensively edited and is being re released July to Oct 2013. Its a great series for lovers of urban fantasy and paranormal romance. Stars: Cracking book, kept me glued, has to be a five :)

WOW! I literally finished this book with a smile on my face and said, "WOW!" ;-)Like so many of my books I walked into this one blind knowing only that I have liked all the previous books I've read by Keri Arthur. It was not until I'd received my ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) of this book from NetGalley that I found it was the 2nd in the series. That doesn't detract from how much I enjoyed it in the least! I felt that previous events eluded to were well explained and this book was excellent in and of itself but also served as a springboard to go buy the first in the series! This was a fun read, the kind that sucks you in and holds you tight from page to page. Had I not been working 10-12 hour days I would have finished this within a matter of days. It was utterly gripping! :-)Nikki is so...normal. Well, besides the telekinetic and psychic powers! She's also so in love with Michael, who like most men - be they vampire or human - is being a bit pigheaded about it. He's the lovely long-suffering type who thinks he has to love from afar. His suffering is done with a sincere heart as he doesn't wish to drag Nikki into a world where things go bump in the night and can kill you. His reluctance has merit but still, from page one you just want to bonk him on the head (in a good way) and make him see what is right in front of him! ;-)As books go this was a total thriller! There is passion simmering - hello, hunky vampire who's in love with our leading lady! LOL! - but oodles of danger as they investigate the disappearance of both teens and wealthy business men in a playland for the rich and famous.Teeming with passion, intrigue and danger - how could you ever put it down???I give it a super 5 star rating and am now off in search of the first book in the series! These will be ones I purchase for my library. :-)Enjoy!XXOO~HopeFrom NetGalley.com: Hearts in DarknessNikki and Michael Book 2Keri ArthurRandom House Publishing Group - Bantam DellDellPub Date - Aug 27 2013PASSION WITH A BITEPrivate Investigator Nikki James has a lot to contend with.
