Review by Jill WilliamsonKevin Russell has had a crush on Janessa Blackington for ages, and he’s finally worked up the courage to ask her out. He is thrilled when she says yes. But the more he hangs out with her, he discovers that she’s into some things that make him uncomfortable, like drinking and drugs. Being the youngest member in the Russell family is a lonely place to be, though, and Janessa makes him happy. Lately he feels invisible at home. His big sister is getting married. His other sister and brother are always busy. Even his mom is seeing someone. Kevin drowns his sorrows in his relationship with Janessa. But the decisions he’s making could cost him his dreams and possibly his life. This is a cute story about a first crush gone wrong. Kevin likes Janessa because she’s beautiful and popular, but he never takes the time to think about what kind of person she is. Turns out, she’s not his type at all. This story gets you thinking that it might be a good idea to jot down what qualities you do and don’t want in a relationship before you start dating someone. Kevin learns the hard way that doing something he doesn’t believe in just to please a girl is just plain dumb. Mendoza also ties up the series in a sweet way, showing what happens to Melena and Dylan, Nick and Gina, Cassie and Neil, and Mr. and Mrs. Russell. I won’t spoil it, but the phrase, “And they all lived happily ever after,” comes to mind. Hooray!
