twenty wagging tales a year of rescuing large dogs Reviews
I envy Barrie Hawkins and his wife Dorothy. They have dedicated themselves to rescuing homeless and neglected dogs and as a result their work is transforming both canine and human lives in ways they had never predicted. At times the work seems unbearably tough, emotionally, but the rewards appear incomparable. This book details their first year's work rescuing German Shepherds and large breeds and the unpredictably funny and heart-renching moments that they were faced with. I found myself crying on at least three separate occasions and had to put the book to one side, but the urge to be enveloped in the wonderful story soon won me over. A beautiful, satisfying read that is written with humility, stoicism and is never in danger of becoming overly sentimental. Barrie, Dorothy, you deserve OBEs.
If we were never thinking of getting a dog, this book would make you and make you take a rescue....good choice for me Jean!! I read parts of it to Ciara on Sat and last night and she loved it too - even though the book didn't have pictures ;) The only complaint - I read 70 pages on Sat night and then couldn't put it down last night... Bawled my eyes out at "Friends" return but I was more affected by the lady who came looking for a puppy but took the "old-age pensioner" and he died under his favourite tree (eyes filling up here again as I type). Kleenex ahoy
What lovely people to look after these dogs. I strongly believe that people should have to be checked before they are allowed a dog and then there may not be as many abandoned dogs. My local shelter is full of abandoned Staffies - who are just the most wonderful dogs.
At times the book was sad but it was also a book which showed that some humans on this planet cares for dogs.
I felt the emotions which Barrie and Dorothy went through. Excellent descriptions of their various dilemmas.
